Background of the study
In recent years, the urgency to address environmental challenges has placed climate change mitigation at the forefront of global and local policy debates. Informal education, characterized by non-curricular, community-based learning initiatives, has emerged as a pivotal strategy to enhance environmental literacy and cultivate proactive attitudes toward climate change. In Ibi Local Government Area, traditional practices and community gatherings have provided a platform for disseminating environmental knowledge beyond formal school settings (Obi, 2023). These informal avenues—ranging from local workshops, radio discussions, and community theater to social media campaigns—offer a dynamic mechanism for engaging citizens in sustainability practices. They emphasize experiential learning, peer-to-peer interaction, and the integration of indigenous knowledge with modern scientific perspectives (Adebayo, 2024). Such educational practices are crucial in regions where formal education systems may not comprehensively cover environmental issues, thereby necessitating alternative approaches to foster ecological awareness.

The community’s active participation in informal learning processes has resulted in a gradual yet perceptible shift in attitudes toward environmental stewardship. These initiatives encourage critical thinking about resource utilization, promote energy conservation, and underscore the importance of community action in combating climate change. The integration of traditional ecological wisdom with contemporary environmental science serves as an effective bridge between past practices and future sustainability goals (Adebola, 2025). However, while anecdotal evidence suggests positive outcomes, systematic evaluations of these informal education interventions are limited. This gap raises questions about the scalability, sustainability, and overall impact of such educational models in fostering long-term behavioral changes. The need to critically appraise the role of informal education in this context is underscored by the growing urgency to implement climate change mitigation strategies that are both culturally relevant and widely accessible. Furthermore, the multifaceted nature of climate education necessitates a holistic approach that considers local socio-economic and cultural factors, ensuring that educational efforts are not only informative but also transformative. The present study aims to explore these dynamics, investigating how informal education initiatives in Ibi Local Government Area influence individual and collective attitudes toward climate change mitigation, while addressing the challenges and opportunities inherent in these non-formal educational practices (Chinwe, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized potential of informal education to foster environmental consciousness, there exists a significant gap in empirical research regarding its impact on climate change mitigation attitudes in Ibi Local Government Area. The community is currently exposed to various informal educational platforms; however, the extent to which these initiatives translate into sustained behavioral change remains ambiguous. Many local residents, although aware of environmental issues, still engage in practices that contribute to climate change due to a lack of in-depth understanding of sustainable alternatives. This paradox—high awareness but low behavioral change—poses a critical challenge for policymakers and educators alike (Obi, 2023). The absence of structured evaluation frameworks for these informal interventions further complicates efforts to measure their effectiveness. Moreover, the diversity of informal education methods makes it difficult to standardize best practices that could be scaled up or integrated with formal education programs.

Furthermore, socio-cultural factors unique to Ibi Local Government Area might influence the reception and impact of informal education. Resistance to change, traditional beliefs, and limited resources could hinder the translation of educational efforts into practical climate change mitigation strategies. This study aims to critically assess these barriers and evaluate the overall contribution of informal education to fostering positive environmental attitudes. By identifying the underlying challenges and potential areas for improvement, the study seeks to provide actionable recommendations for stakeholders. Addressing these issues is imperative to ensure that informal educational practices not only increase awareness but also lead to measurable, sustainable actions in climate change mitigation (Adebayo, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate the influence of informal education on community attitudes toward climate change mitigation.

  • To identify the key informal educational methods contributing to environmental awareness in Ibi Local Government Area.

  • To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of informal education in promoting sustainable practices.

Research questions:

  • How does informal education shape attitudes toward climate change mitigation in Ibi Local Government Area?

  • What are the most effective informal education practices currently in use?

  • How can these practices be improved to foster greater community engagement in sustainable actions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Informal education has a significant positive impact on fostering a proactive attitude toward climate change mitigation.

  • H2: There is a direct relationship between the frequency of informal educational activities and the level of environmental awareness.

  • H3: Integrating indigenous knowledge with modern environmental concepts enhances the effectiveness of informal education.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive evaluation of informal education’s role in climate change mitigation, offering insights into how non-formal learning initiatives can influence community behavior. By addressing the gap between awareness and action, the research informs policymakers, educators, and community leaders on effective strategies to integrate informal educational methods with broader environmental initiatives. The findings may facilitate the development of culturally tailored educational programs, thus promoting sustainable practices and strengthening community resilience against climate change challenges (Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study focuses solely on informal education initiatives in Ibi Local Government Area as they relate to climate change mitigation. It does not cover formal educational systems or interventions outside the selected geographical area. The research is limited to assessing current practices and may not fully capture historical trends or external influences.

Definitions of terms:

  • Informal Education: Learning that occurs outside the formal school system, often through community activities and self-directed initiatives.

  • Climate Change Mitigation: Strategies and actions aimed at reducing or preventing the emission of greenhouse gases.

  • Community Engagement: The process by which community members actively participate in initiatives and decision-making that affect their environment.
